A community champion is a person who collaborates with a variety of partners to strengthen school, business, and non-profit relationships for the benefit of the community and our students.
Skowhegan Area Middle Schoolโs Summer Community Champion is Matt Keister!
Matt spends countless hours before and after school preparing for the alewives field trip for the 7th and 8th SAMS students. Some of his preparation includes organizing lessons with science and social studies teachers, setting up a presentation with a biologist for the students before the field trip, and connecting with biologists, dam operators, and non-profit organizations to plan a full day of events for every 7th and 8th grade student. This is all greatly appreciated and certainly well above and beyond!
Without him, our students would never experience the alewives trip. This is a monumental task--the planning, organizing and outreach to so many people to make this happen for our kids is nothing short of herculean.
Congratulations, Matt, we are so thankful to have you as a part of our community!

The mission? Give Barbie the thrill of a lifetime from a high platformโgetting her as close to the ground as possible without a crash landing.
How the math came to life:
Collect the Data: Teams recorded how far Barbie dropped using a small number of rubber bands.
Make a Scatter Plot: Students plotted their coordinates to visualize the rubber band stretch.
Draw a Line of Best Fit: Teams analyzed the trend to map out a clear linear relationship.
Create Slope-Intercept Equations: Using (y = mx + b), students calculated the exact slope and y-intercept based on their line.
The Big Prediction: Everyone used their equations to calculate the exact number of rubber bands needed for the final high drop!

Students got to see real meteorites, glowing minerals, and incredible gems from around the world. One of the highlights was learning about rocks found right here in Maine and how they formed over time. The interactive exhibits kept everyone engaged, and students asked some fantastic questions! They each got to hold a piece of the moon and of Mars!
It was a great opportunity to connect what weโve been learning in science class to the real world. Plus, it was a fun day filled with curiosity, discovery, and a little bit of sparkle!
Thank you to our staff and chaperones for helping make the trip a success!

Our sixth graders found out firsthand during their visit to WABI! From stepping into the studio to watching how a live broadcast comes together, students got a real look at what it takes to go on air.
The best part? Seeing themselves on live TV during the noon weather and news report! ๐ฅ A few future broadcasters might just have been inspiredโฆ
Thank you for having us, WABI!

We are especially proud of the 5 recipients from our Skowhegan Area Middle Schoolโ thank you for representing our school, and congratulations on this incredible achievement.
A big thank you goes to the event sponsors, Skowhegan Savings Bank, Franklin Savings Bank, and Redington Fairview General Hospital. Thank you for always supporting our students' dreams, you made all of this possible!

Skowhegan Area Middle School's spring community champion award goes to Mrs Poulin!
Mrs Poulin creates a safe, inclusive learning environment in a fun and creative classroom that engages all of her students, BUT she also takes her positive energy into the community. Mrs Poulin has been bringing Somerset students to Redington Memorial Home to play games with the residents and make connections with our community. Somerset students have represented SAMS so well on these visits, and we are so proud of them and Mrs Poulin for showing the community how AMAZING our students are. Mrs Poulin cares deeply about our students and our community. She creates impactful and engaging learning opportunities for her students, like the eighth grade Personal Interest Projects, inspiring students to interview professionals in the career paths that they were interested in, and helping students set up meetings to learn more about their aspirations.
Congratulations Mrs Poulin, SAMS is so lucky to have you!

Lots of giggles, a few โewws,โ and most importantlyโstudents are leaving feeling more confident and informed. And as always, we hope the conversations keep going at school, at home, and everywhere in between. ๐

Connect with local organizations, enjoy a free dinner, and hear from a panel of mental health professionals during an engaging discussion for parents. Students will also have the chance to join in on activities in the gym while the panel is taking place.
We encourage families to pre-register (use QR code on the flyer) to help us plan for dinner and to submit questions for the panel ahead of time. We hope to see you there!

Support our students while celebrating their creativity! Each child in an art class this year has created a unique piece of artwork that can be turned into keepsakes like mugs, magnets, and moreโperfect for gifts or family treasures.
Every purchase helps support our school, so be sure to check out your studentโs custom catalog and order soon. Thank you for supporting our young artists! Our fundraiser will be live until April 3rd!
